Human foot is designed in such a way that it comfortably supports the weight of the entire body. Whenever you run or jump, you put additional weight on your foot. You can run with your full potential only when you have a perfect foot with neutral arch and a correct stride.
However, not all of us are blessed with a perfect foot structure. Though, most people have neutral arches, flat footed and people with high arches are also not uncommon. Due to this, the gait is affected to a great extent.
Running or jogging is characterized by two types of movements - pronation and supination. When your foot hits the ground, an inward rolling of foot is necessary to bear the weight correctly. This inward movement is called pronation.
However, sometimes the foot rolls a bit too much inwards (over-pronation), while sometimes it simply does not roll inward. This is called supination or underpronation.
Normally, people with high arches have a tendency to underpronate. Moreover, underpronation reduces your chances of winning the race against people with neutral arch. However, you need not worry about this problem, as you can easily correct your gait with the help of special running shoes that are exclusively designed.
Shoes meant for underpronation have extra cushioning to provide maximum comfort while running. The problem with underpronators is that due to the high arch, there is a poor shock absorption and the weight of the body is not evenly distributed.
The 'flexibility' shoes work great for underpronators. These shoes offer minimal support in the medial part of the shoe, in order to encourage the inward movement. Moreover, they have a soft sole which acts as a better shock absorber, and spreads the weight evenly throughout the foot.
These shoes do not have any features that prevent pronation, thus the foot can roll inward to its maximum. The only problem with these shoes is that due to their soft structure they are less durable. Also, they are more suitable for people with mild underpronation. People with excessive underpronation should opt for 'stability-flexibility' shoes.
While buying special shoes, you need to take a few factors into consideration. Determine the type of surface you'll be running on; whether it's a usual concrete road, a well maintained jogging track or off the road, on a rough trail. Heavy and sturdy trailer shoes are a good option while running on rocky patches.
Consider the amount of time you'll be running for and also the weather in which you'll be running in. You may not find special shoes in any shoe store. They are usually available in special shops.
If you begin wearing these shoes right from the beginning, you can prevent yourself from getting injuries that are common for runners with underpronation. These shoes provide great comfort and alleviate the need of plantar fasciitis surgery, which is common among underpronators.
